Literature Text

Letters etched into a desk
Name of a girl that I once knew
But you knew better
Every letter scratched
The name onto your heart
Like the heart you carved above it
With an "I" to start it off
You know, I think you really meant it,
Now I think you really did

But for two years,
We never knew that she was gone
We'd been away for far too long
We just came back one summer
And realized she's not there
And you ask where she is
And you ask how she's been
And they look away and say

Letters etched into a grave
Name of a girl that I once knew
But you knew better
Every letter stabbed
A hole into your heart
I found that picture of her
Hanging on my wall
It's sort of strange
How I'd forgotten it was
Ever there at all
It hasn't changed

But for two years,
We never knew that she was gone
We'd been away for far too long
We just came back one summer
And realized she's not there
And you ask where she is
And you ask how she's been
And they look away and say

"Well, didn't you hear?"

Letters etched into a desk
Name of a girl that I once knew
But you knew better
A song I wrote about Tawnee, a girl who used to date my brother and who died in a car accident.
